Gin Recipes

Gin is a most quintissentially English drink (although it's a derivative of a Dutch drink called jenever), and the English love to make gin, and drink gin, and put gin in everything from tonic water to potato chips. Gin is as English as it gets quite honestly.

I've had a dabble with making gin, that is bathtub gin, which is easier to make with less risk of killing yourself, and you can read about my exciting ginsperiments here. Perhaps it'll give you some ideas that you'd like to try yourself

Base: Vodka

Botanicals: Juniper, Coriander Seed, Angelica Root, Orange Peel, Lemon Peel, Orris Root, Cardamom Seeds, Cassia Bark

Description: This gin has all the fragrant, warming and floral flavours from the basic kit. I didn't add anything weird to this gin. As for what it tastes like, it tastes like archetypal gin, there's nothing weird at all going on here.

Base: Vodka

Botanicals: Juniper, Coriander Seed, Orris Root, Cubeb, Black Peppercorn, Green Peppercorn, White Peppercorn, Pink Peppercorn, Sichuan Pepper, Chipotle Pepper, Cayenne Pepper, Red Bell Pepper, Florina Pepper

Description: This gin has all of the types of pepper you can imagine in it. I mean all of them. It has an interesting taste, first in has that piney juniper taste that everyone loves in their gin. Then is has some heat from the peppercorns, then boom, the chilli hits you, but it doesn't just burn you, so it's delicious. Amazingly enough all of these flavour profiles are separate from one another, not all mixed together

Base: Vodka

Botanicals: Juniper, Coriander Seed, Angelica Root, Licorice, Garlic, Paprika, Cumin, Allspice, Fenugreek

Description: This gin has the juniper, coriander, angelica root base. Additionally I have used licorice which is recommended to blend the other flavours. I have also used a bit of the basterma spices: fenugreek, allspice, garlic, cumin and paprika to give a middle eastern spicy twist into the gin. Tasting it, the basterma spice mix is subtle, but definitely there! This is not your fresh, citrusy gin!

Base: Vodka

Botanicals: Juniper, Coriander Seed, Angelica Root, Grains of Paradise, Cubeb, Orange Peel, Lemon Peel

Description: With my first gin, I was aiming for the basic juniper, angelica, coriander base, while using the orange and lemon peel to give the citrus notes, and the cubebs and grains of paradise to provide peppery notes, to give a lemon-pepper gin. As a first go at making gin it was delicious, citrusy, slightly sharp and very fragrant. Delicious
