About Enzymes

Enzymology is the study of enzymes. Enzymes are very cool proteins which act as biological catalysts, speeding up the rate of reactions. Non biological catalysts also exist and you may be familiar with one in your car called a catalytic converter, however these generally require high temperatures and pressures. Because enzymes function in less extreme environments, they enable life to exist, because without them, the chemical reactions that take place in life would not happen, or happen so slowly as to make life impossible at normal temperatures and pressures.

Enzyme Basics

What are enzymes and how do they work?

Enzyme Kinetics

Enzyme behaviour can be described using math.

Enzymes and Equilibrium

Enzymes speed up reactions, but they still work within an equilibrium, see how this works.

Graphing Enzymes

The properties of enzymes can be derived by plotting experimental data on various plots. See how these can be used to study enzymes.

Enzyme Inhibitors

Enzymes don't always work the same way all the time, they can be inhibited.

Studying Enzymes

How enzymes behave is important to know, how do scientists study them?
